Are they being naughty or something else.......?
Just like our son, who lives with anxiety, dogs can vocalise their fears and act out their frustration in not being able to cope in a situation. As dog and human parents we sometimes take these reactions as 'naughty behaviours' or think that 'they don't listen to me'!
Living with a Reactive dog can be stressful and hard work but your dog is stressed too. They are facing their demons every day!
This stress and fear can cause destructive behaviours and an inability to cope in a lot of situations.
What we actually need to do is listen to our dogs and what they are telling us! Noticing little things about their body postures etc... can help to understand what they are communicating to us! Dogs do not lie, they are an open book if we really look!
Watch your dog for about 10 minutes and notice different postures with ears, eyes, tail, mouth etc... you may start noticing more and more what they do when there is a noise for example!
Does your dog shy away from or seem nervous around men in general?
Sometimes it is stressful if your dog barks and lunges or tries to run and hide from men. We see it a lot with dogs from other countries or from rescue centres.
Our Part Time Trainer, Mike specialises in helping dogs feel better about men and be able to cope around them.
Mike says, "Within our dog boarding service, we saw quite a lot of dogs who were nervous around men. I saw this as an opportunity to help them with that while they stayed with us. I gave them space to get to know me and never approached them or forced them to approach me. I found that with understanding, patience and communication, that the dogs soon realised I was not a threat to them and I enjoyed lots of cuddles after a few days of getting to know each other".
Both Tracey and Mike are here to help you get a better understanding of you and your dog and to support you in helping your furry pal feel better about situations. Our first job as dog owners is to ask why are they doing this? Once we get to the bottom of their fears, we can help them gain confidence.
These are just some of the behaviours a reactive dog exhibits and we would be happy to help you with them:-
Whatever your goal is for a calmer life with your dog, we are here to help and support you.
Reactivity is a complex issue to resolve as its cause is usually due to the dogs emotions and mental health. This process will require long term support!
Sometimes pain is a big factor in reactivity too so we would ask you for your consent to contact your vet. This is to cross reference with them any underlying issues or history that we may need to be aware of.
Our process and Programs are below:-
Step One - Free Discovery Call
We will arrange to call you for a 15 minute Discovery Session to discuss the issues you are having and for us to get to know each other. We will also go over the Programmes below and work out which one would be more beneficial.
The Discovery Call can either be via a phone call or via Zoom if you prefer.
We will send you the vet referral consent form, as stated above, following this call.
Step Two - Free Initial Consultation
We will arrange to visit you at home to go into more detail about the issues, to take history information and to observe some of the issues. You will have a chance to ask questions or let us know any concerns whilst we are there.
This Consultation also gives us a chance to meet you and your fur baby and for you both to get to know us better.
We will arrange the date and time of the Consultation at the Discovery Session.
Step Three - The Support Sessions
It is time to put the support into action so we will start to help you and your dog with your goals. The sessions will last up to an hour depending on your doggie's needs that day as overstimulating a dog's brain has a negative effect on learning.
You can either have weekly or fortnightly sessions, whichever is more suitable.
Silver Program - £300
Gold Program - £380
Payments are due before the Initial Consultation!
Ongoing Support - £100 per month
We would recommend additional support following the Programs above due to the long term process in helping a reactive dog.
So if you feel you need our help with your reactive dog, then please give us a call today! We will be happy to hear from you xx
